The goldfinch, Carel Fabritius
Delivery from 4 weeks
"The Goldfinch" is a small but remarkable oil painting created by Dutch artist Carel Fabritius in 1654. Measuring just 33.5 x 22.8 cm, it is housed in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, Netherlands.
The painting depicts a life-sized European goldfinch perched on a feeding box. The bird is rendered with exquisite detail, its feathers a blend of warm browns, blacks, and vibrant yellows. Its delicate feet grip a wooden perch, and a thin chain tethers it to the feeding box, a common practice for pet birds in the 17th century.
The background is a plain, light-colored wall, creating a stark contrast that makes the bird appear three-dimensional and lifelike. Fabritius employs trompe l'oeil techniques, giving the illusion that the bird might fly off the panel at any moment.
The painting showcases Fabritius's mastery of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and realism. His loose, confident brushstrokes were innovative for the time, anticipating techniques that would become popular in later centuries.
"The Goldfinch" is one of Fabritius's few surviving works, as many were destroyed in the Delft explosion of 1654. It has become an iconic piece of Dutch Golden Age painting, admired for its simplicity, technical skill, and captivating portrayal of a common bird.
