Composition IV
Delivery from 4 weeks
Composition IV, created by Wassily Kandinsky in 1911, is a seminal work of abstract art that marks a crucial point in the artist's transition from representational to non-objective painting. This large oil on canvas piece (159.5 x 250.5 cm) is housed in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The painting features a dynamic interplay of bold colors, shapes, and lines that create a sense of movement and energy across the canvas. While largely abstract, some recognizable forms can be discerned, such as two lances crossing in the upper left, suggesting a battle scene.
Kandinsky employs a vibrant palette dominated by blues, reds, yellows, and greens. These colors are applied in various intensities and transparencies, creating depth and visual interest. The composition is divided into two distinct sides: the left side is more chaotic and dense, while the right side is relatively calm with more open space.
Thick black lines traverse the canvas, acting as both divisive elements and connectors between different areas of the painting. Circular forms and undulating lines add to the rhythmic quality of the work.
Composition IV exemplifies Kandinsky's theory that color and form could express inner, spiritual truths, independent of representational imagery.
